The Leather

Constructed from Oak bark tanned steerhide, this leather is chosen for its superior quality, tensile strength and sheer beauty. The tannery where this leather originates has stood virtually unchanged for nearly 400 years. Powered by a watermill, making the process ecologically sound, the hides, which are also sourced in England, are tanned using an oak bark liquor and the whole process takes 12 months, every part of the process carefully completed by hand. The result is an extremely strong, robust and aesthetically pleasing leather.

The Belt making process

The hide is selected and one edge cut perfectly straight. Then using a plough gauge the strap is cut to fit the heavy brass buckle. A thinner strap is then cut from the same hide for the belt keeper loop. The buckle end of the belt is cut square and using a knife and sandpaper the corners are rounded off. The edges of the strap are chamfered using an edging tool. The Raw edges are coated with specialist gum and then burnished with smooth bone until the edges have a glazed appearance. When dry, an edge coat is applied to seal, this process is repeated until the edge is smooth when dry, usually 4 applications. The belt keeper goes through the same process. A slot punch is used to to cut the slot for the buckle spike, the buckle is then fitted and 5 rivets are used to hold it in position. The tail end of the belt is cut using an English point cutter and the same processes applied to the raw edges as above. The belt holes are carefully punched and it is ready to be worn.

How to measure

Thread measuring tape through empty belt loops whilst the Jeans are being worn and take exact measurement, this is the length at which the centre hole of 5 will be punched. The correct place for a belt to end is at the hip so the overall length will be the provided measurement plus 25%.

Please do not measure an old belt or use jean size.
