Details

The MA-1 was first introduced in the mid-1950s used by the U.S. Air Force and Navy pilots and ground crew. Designed for use in temperatures of 14-50 degrees F, the MA-1 had a 100% wool knit collar, waistband and cuffs. The MA-1was the successor to the B-15 which had a mouton fur collar, the MA-1 incorporated a knit collar as opposed to the mouton as this interfered with parachute harness. This iconic military jacket was admired and soon adopted by civilians and remains today one of the most popular styles ever produced. Originally a military sage green nylon outer with an Indian orange colour liner so in the event of a plane crash the crew could reverse the jacket so as to be easily seen by rescue personnel, it is now produced by many in various colour and fabric combinations. We request your measurements for all our jackets so we can select the best size for you from our standard size range. Sleeve and Body length can be adjusted if required. Due to the nature of the natural raw materials we use and the traditional method of manufacture we employ it is not always possible to meet exact measurement requirements. The products we build are not designed to be tailored like a suit, they will after a "break in" period soften and mold to the shape of your own body, our jackets are built to be worn. We do not use a production line system or have racks of jackets ready to ship, each and every jacket is made to order, individually handcrafted here in Scotland by one of our specialists. Bespoke patterns can be created if preferred, please contact us direct with specifications for a full quote. The Simmons Bilt leather version incorporates many of the original features.
